IDENTIFYING ABUSE
Domestic Violence occurs when one person uses power and control over another. It presents itself in many forms, including the following:
- Emotional Abuse
- Name-calling, humiliation, playing mind games
Isolation - Limiting contact with others, and using jealousy to justify it
Intimidation - Using gestures, looks and actions to create fear
- Coercion and Threats
- Threatening to hurt, leave, or kill
- Economic Abuse
- Limiting access to employment or financial resources
- Privilege
- Creating a difference of power in a relationship, making all decisions
- Threatening to take children away, using them to relay messages, or harassing during visitation
- Minimizing, denying and blaming
- Making light of abuse, shifting responsibility for abusive behavior, minimizing
